After his first two films – The Butterfly Murders (1979) and We’re Going to Eat You (1980) – failed at the box office, New Wave icon Tsui Hark turned to a gritty tale of teenage rebellion and crime. The story follows a group of teenage bomb makers who find themselves tangled up with arms dealers, gangsters, corrupt cops, and a menacing girl named Wan-chu. Their subsequent crime spree pits them against international gun smugglers, pushing them into grave danger. Despite heavy censorship of the original explosive scenes, the film's intense and unflinching depiction of violence, including shocking moments such as animal cruelty and a graveyard showdown, left audiences stunned. It received critical acclaim upon its release and has since become a landmark film in the Hong Kong New Wave movement. Despite censorship battles and preservation issues that still exist, it remains a scathing look at colonialism and corruption through a wild, darkly humorous adventure.

Director’s bio
Known for his wicked genre-hopping and state-of-the-art spectacles, Tsui Hark is one of the forefathers of the Hong Kong New Wave. His four-decades-long career has seen him jump between social critique, period fantasies, martial arts epics, and propaganda war films. His most notable directing works include Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, Peking Opera Blues, Green Snake, and the Once Upon a Time in China and Detective Dee series. He also has a prolific producing career and has birthed many iconic Hong Kong film series such as A Better Tomorrow and A Chinese Ghost Story, leaving an indomitable legacy in Chinese-speaking culture.
